Project 2 Description

Project 2 Description

For this project, I was expected to construct a cardboard chair that symbolized the relationship between me and another person. Like our first exercise, the seat of the chair was required to stand a minimum of 6 inches off of the ground. However, instead of using a single sheet of cardboard, we could construct this chair out of multiple pieces. My final chair stood as a representation of the relationship between me and my mother. Once my final chair was finished, I went on to make drawings of it in 2-point perspective. Once I was comfortable enough with perspective, I made a large drawing of my chair in its own environment (with walls, a window, a door...and an elephant).
Summary
This exercise was definitely easier than the first. With a relationship as complex as the one between my mom and I, I was subject to many possible ideas. The thought of being able to make this chair out of separate pieces was a great relief, as well. I was pleased with my original idea. I was convinced that it would work out nicely because the model I made from poster board seemed to be a success. Ultimately, it didn't turn out as planned. From then on, I seemed to fall behind. I became stressed and hopeless thinking that I would never get it done. With a little bit of influence from some of my classmates, however, I was able to finish my chair ( with a better design than the first, also!). If there was one thing that I could change, it would be to make my chair seem a little less stiff (through the use of more organic shapes, maybe). Although I was happier with my final design, I still wanted to incorporate some themes from my first prototype. For example, the “blocked off” idea I had. Perhaps what I could have done was made the seat just a tad bit lower and cut out the sides to be a bit taller. I think I would've been more satisfied with something like that.
